This kit joins our other renewable energy kits in allowing you to explore the different ways energy is generated.  This vertical axi wind turbine comes with its own mini torch that plugs in to the turbine to give a final use for all that power.
 
The kits have two options with choices of either full brass or a brass and M4 studding combination :
 
DIY kit:
This includes circuit board, electronic components, motor, bearings and gears. This kit is intended as being part of a wider task that involves students manufacturing the components of the wind turbine  
 
DIY Lasercutting Option:  For those who have access to a laser cutter and want to reduce the overall costs.  The top and bottom plates are simply guides for the shafts and bearings and can be replaced by 3mm acrylic (buyer supplied).  Once purchased the buyer will receive an e-mail with two .dxf files that can be imported into applications that drive a lasercutter (e.g. 2D Design)  - see below for a guide to included materials and components.
 
Full Kit:
For those who want to reduce the time, or dont have access to a lasercutter, the full kit includes the bottom and top plates with all materials needed to manufacture 50 units - see below for a guide to included materials and components.
 
There are two options on materials:
 
Materials:  Studding & brass.
In this lengths of brass rod are supplied for the compound gear shaft (35mm per student) and the turbine main shaft is produced from 195mm lengths of steel M4 studding. The studding is a cheaper option for those who aren't looking to cut screwthreads with students. All other materials needed are supplied 
 
 
For 50 wind turbines the materials will include
 
26pcs M4 x 500mm zinc coated steel studding in 1m lengths (195mm per student - 4 student's per length)
4 pcs x 500mm, 4mm brass rod for compound gear shaft (35mm per student)
150 x 3mm id x18mm spacers & 150 x 3mm x 10mm spacers.
200 x m4 nyloc nuts
150 x m3 nuts
300 m2.5 machine screws and nuts
150 x m3 x 35mm machine screws, pan head.
300 Pieces of A6 300gsm white card (Holes to be punched by students)
